About Yuba City, CA
Apparently, in the mid 18th century Yuba City was actually a steamboat stop and had been frequented by Spanish and Mexican scouting expeditions. Since it was located on the river there were grapes growing there. The Spanish word for grape is “uva”, and it is believed that the name eventually changed into “Yuba”.
In 1854 the city was selected to become the county seat for Sutter County, for a year, before it was voted to move it to another city.
The population of Yuba City was estimated in 2016 to be 66845 people.

About Marysville, CA

Perhaps you have heard of the Gold Rush, and Sutter’s Mill. In 1842 Marysville was a ranch that was owned by John Sutter, who became famous and wealthy when an employee of his discovered gold in the backwash of one of his lumber mills.
If you are looking for something to do in the area then we highly recommend that you take the time to go check out Sutter’s Mill and the history of the California Gold Rush.

About Sutter’s Mill

Have you ever wondered why the San Francisco 49ers are called the “49ers”? Well, it is because Gold was discovered in 1848 which sparked a nationwide, and even worldwide Gold Rush to California in 1849. San Francisco became a boom town during this time.

While workers were building a water-powered sawmill, one of the workers in the water found gold flakes in the water near the lumber mill. Word spread like wildfire and over the following ten years over 300,000 people flowed into the area. Boom towns sprang up all over the area, and it was quite an exciting and sometimes desperate time for miners.

Before that, the entire state of California just had just a small population of non-natives estimated around 14,000 people. However, in the Eastern United States people all over the place dropped everything and headed across the plains, through the wild and dangerous pioneer country, chasing their hopes of striking it rich!

You can imagine the lawlessness that plagued the area around Sutter’s Mill, it has become the legendary focus of many old western movies. Another big problem was that lumber was in such a high demand that it was almost impossible to meet it. The railroads began bringing in lumber car after car, and the rivers were full of timber being floated to the surrounding mills.

Fires were another major problem as they were practically impossible to contain and some fires destroyed entire towns.

The boom towns that were built practically overnight were filled with people, there was no proper sewage control, no fire departments, and law enforcement was virtually non-existent.

If you are going to be in the area, you would really benefit from a day trip to Sutter’s Mill for an American History tour.

Sutter’s Mill is about 90 minutes away from Yuba City and Marysville. It is a pleasant country drive and can truly make for a great and adventurous day. So get up early, get your coffee, pack your lunch, and go for it!
